Cantaloupes have a rough netted and green colored skin and an orange colored flesh that is very juicy, sweet when ripe, and it also has a floral musky aroma. They are typically 6-10 inches (15–25cm) in length and are somewhat oblong, though not as oblong as watermelons. The skin is peeled and it is normally eaten as a fresh fruit, in a salad, or as a dessert with ice cream. The seeds are edible and may be dried and eaten as a snack. The Cantaloupe originated its name from the Italian village of Cantalupo, where it was cultivated from seeds brought there from Armenia. Today they are grown all over the world in warm climates on vines that are trailing and are slightly hairy with simple oval leaves arranged alternately on the stem. It is an annual plant that grow best in sandy, well-aerated, well-watered soil that is free of encroaching weeds that can grow up to 9.8 feet (3m) in length.
