The Cranberry is an edible red fruit that is small and has a sour flavor. It grows on small trailing shrub plants with short branches. The leaves are evergreen, oval shaped, and less than 0.5 inches (1.2 cm) long. The flowers are bell shaped and have four rose tinted petals. The round dark red berries are about the size of currants and are often spotted and have an acidic taste. Cranberries are cultivated on acid soils of peat or vegetable mold with a surface layer of sand. In the USA cranberries are grown extensively in Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Wisconsin and near the Pacific coast in Washington and Oregon. Harvesting begins in early September and continues until late October. Cranberry fields are commonly flooded, and the ripe fruits float on top of the water and are scooped from the water surface. In cooking recipes cranberries are a popular pie filling, their juice is widely marketed as a beverage, in sauces and relishes. Most cranberry products are consumed in the United States and Canada, Cranberries are traditionally associated with U.S. and Canadian Thanksgiving and Christmas meals.
