The Blueberry fruit is small and round with a flared crown at the end, they are pale greenish at first, then reddish-purple, and finally blue when ripe. Blueberries grow on meduim size shrubs that have simple elliptical leaves arranged alternately along the stems, generally they have a sweet taste when fully ripe. They are an excellent source of dietary fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, manganese, iron, and a number of antioxidants. They are commonly eaten fresh as a dessert fruit and can be baked in a variety of pastries. The majority of blueberries are grown commercially in North and South America, increased interest in the crop has led to a growing number of farms around the world.
