The Boysenberry is a small fleshy fruit with large seeds and a deep maroon or reddish-black color, it is a hybrid plant of the blackberry and raspberry. It grows on mediums size bramble shrubs with woody thorny stems. Boysenberries have a rich, sweet, and tart flavor, also are nutritious, being rich in vitamin C, fiber, calcium, and antioxidants, and a source of iron. This unique berry may be eaten fresh, used in jams, preserves, pies, and syrups, or even made into wine. The growing season is short and boysenberries are not very stable once picked, making it important that fresh berries be eaten within two or three days of purchase. Boysenberries are grown mostly in New Zealand and the United States, particularly on the Pacific coast from southern California to Oregon.
